Winter trees on one face, composed black on the other. Size 9.
A ring with two faces. One side is dendritic opal — milky white with dark manganese branching through it like bare winter trees. Turn it over and there is black onyx, flat and glossy and utterly plain. Onyx is the composed one, decisive and without ornament, which is exactly why it works as the reverse of something so detailed.
I built it reversible because those two surfaces suit completely different days. The opal asks to be looked at. The onyx does not. Making it work meant setting both stones back to back and constructing a mount that pivots cleanly and still sits flat on the hand — considerably fussier than a single-face ring, and it took me several attempts to get the pivot true.
Those dark branches are not fossils, though everyone assumes they are. They are mineral deposits that grew through cracks in the stone, following the same branching mathematics as trees and rivers and lightning. Nature repeating itself at a different scale, and I never get tired of pointing it out.

It wears clever. Two moods, one object, and you decide each morning.
Building a piece with two faces doubles the work, and every solder joint on it was flowed by hand over several evenings.
Dendritic patterns are random — this ring cannot be copied.
