A round fire opal in deep purple-black with a single break of green iridescence along one edge — as though the stone cracked open and light got out. I bought it for that one edge.
The front is a simple silver mount with a rolled border, deliberately understated. The reverse is where I went to work: a compass-like pattern radiating from the center, hand-stamped with clusters of dots, dashes and small triangular marks. It looks like a map of somewhere that doesn't exist.
Every one of those marks is a separate strike. When I stamp a back like this I don't draw it first — I start at the center and let the pattern find its own edges, which is why it can never be repeated.
Worn, it feels like carrying a secret. Plain from across the room, dense with detail in your hand.
