Picasso Jasper and Garnet Pendant in Sterling Silver

Gray and white veining, laid down like brushstrokes.

Picasso marble looks painted. The smoky gray and white veining runs across the surface like brushstrokes laid down by someone working fast, which is presumably why it carries the name it does.

I let the slab keep its long curved silhouette instead of squaring it off, then built the bezel to follow that sweep — a freeform edge, fitted to the stone rather than the stone fitted to it. One faceted garnet sits at the top as the only warm note in an otherwise cool piece. Fifty millimeters long, so it hangs like a brushstroke itself.

I almost never design around a sketch. I let each stone decide what it wants to become, and this one clearly wanted to be minimal.

On, it feels modern and slightly severe — elegant in the way an empty room with good light is elegant.

Nature painted it. I just found a way to hang it.
